THE PIT PLANT

And there was a plant,
planted in a shaded and 
shallow pit.

And there was another,
planted on the fertile and 
shade-less ground
near the rim of the pit.

Both were planted 
in the same season--
I was told--
by the selfsame old and odd 
planter. 

But why our poor pit plant 
became stunted 
while our fertile-ground plant 
blossomed 
is a puzzling, but a valid, 
question 
I would want to ask 
the master planter.
